AGMA
FG85
What is AGMA FG85?
AGMA calcined magnesite is a consistent and highly available source of magnesium.
The product comes with a guaranteed minimum magnesium level of 50%, with typical
levels averaging out around 53%. Magnesium deficiency in cattle can give rise
to grass staggers and frequently occurs in grazing animals. This can peak in
spring and autumn and is a primary cause of adult cattle death, particularly
lactating dairy cattle. Housed stock is also at risk due to the high potassium
in intensively produced silages. As magnesium is not readily stored in the body,
a reliable and available daily source of magnesium is therefore essential for
ruminant animals. Calcined magnesite is the preferred source due to its high
magnesium content.
What makes AGMA FG85 such an effective source
of magnesium?
Studies at Glasgow University have demonstrated that particle size is the single
biggest factor influencing magnesium availability from magnesium oxide sources.
In independent studies of calcined magnesite sources, AGMA FG85 has been shown
to have superior bioavailability or delivery of magnesium to the animal, the
highest rumen solubility and consistent product quality.
Magnesium availability in calcined magnesite sources also varies with temperature
of calcination. Calcination is the process whereby crushed magnesite ore is decomposed
to produce magnesium oxide. The optimum calcination temperature range is between
800∞C and 1000∞C and any temperature above or below these levels
will result in a reduction in magnesium availability. AGMA production is carried
out under a tightly controlled kiln temperature range to maximise magnesium availability.
Usage Recommendations
AGMA FG85 can be supplied for incorporation into complete or forage rations on
farm or via compound feeds, blocks and free access minerals.
Recommended rates are:
Dairy cows and adult cattle – 70g/cow/d
(35g magnesium)
Calves – 18g/head/d
(9g magnesium)
Sheep – 10g/head/d
(5g magnesium)
