Alkakarb rumen buffer
What is Alkakarb?
Alkakarb sodium bicarbonate is a valuable aid in poultry diets, used to optimise
performance. Alkakarb is also an established rumen buffer with proven benefits
in both dairy and intensive beef rearing systems. It is particularly suited
to on-farm applications.
The benefits of feeding Alkakarb to poultry
Alkakarb is used to achieve the correct ionic balance in the blood which can
have a large bearing on poultry performance. In layers, sodium maintains egg
production whilst bicarbonate ensures sufficient concentration in the blood
for shell formation. Alkakarb fed to broilers reduces water intake compared
with salt, so improving litter quality and reducing lesions. It also counters
the blood bicarbonate deficiencies seen in heat stressed, panting birds.
- Optimises growth and carcass quality in broilers
- Enhances shell strength and reduces seconds in laying birds – optimises
egg production
- Helps alleviate effects of heat stress
- Reduces hook and breast lesions through improved litter quality
The benefits of feeding Alkakarb to ruminants
Optimal rumen function is essential in order to maximise performance as well
as allowing maximum utilisation of low cost forages. Rumen function can be
impaired by feeding high cereal rations, acidic silages, short chop forage
and starchy forages which in turn can lead to impaired digestion, reduced
intakes and poor performance (e.g. reduced butterfat). Feeding Alkakarb assists
the saliva in its buffering capacity, thus reducing the risk of large drops
in rumen pH which can lead to acidosis. This is practically demonstrated
with:
- Improved forage intakes
- Effective fibre digestion
- Higher milk yields
- Enhanced milk quality, increased butterfat
- Improved feed conversion and liveweight gain
Usage Recommendations
For ruminants Alkakarb can be added to either the concentrate or forage part
of the ration, recommended rates are:
| Dairy cows |
200-250g/cow/d |
| Beef cattle |
1-1.5% diet inclusion (cereal based ration)
100-150 g/head/d (silage based ration) |
| Sheep |
2% diet inclusion (intensive lamb)
50 g/ewe/d (ewes on silage) |
| |
| For poultry: |
| Layers |
1-5kg / tonne feed |
| Broilers |
1-5kg / tonne feed (to reduce lesions)
4+kg/ tonne feed (to reduce heat stress) |
| Turkeys |
1-3kg / tonne feed |
